Paper Bridge Bridge - Simulation - Grading
Drawing and Force Analysis Instructions

CHECK BEFORE YOU START!

Check with your teacher for which option you will be required to complete.
Option #1 - Poster and Force Analysis
Option #2 - Template and Force Analysis

Option #1 - Poster and Force Analysis

Overview - Each student enrolled in Physics I and Pre-AP Physics will enter a Paper Bridge and Full Scale Drawing with Force Analysis Poster to compete in Physics Olympics.  Each student is to complete his or her project according the design requirements and due dates. Students may bring their project to class prior to competition day for approval and inspection by his or her teacher as well as to check their project for minimum supporting mass requirements.

Purpose - To draw a full-size drawing along with force analysis of the bridge.

1. The drawing is to be completed on a standard piece of white poster board (22" X 28").
2. All writing is to be done on a computer and cut and glued onto the poster.
3. Items must be centered/balanced.

Full Scale Drawing
4. The scale of the drawing is 1:1.
5. A straight edge and circle template must be used.
6. Draw the TOP, SIDE and END view of your bridge. This is a detailed line drawing (not a stick drawing). See scoring rubric for grading details.

7. Type and glue the title of your poster centered along the top. Be as creative as you like in naming your project.
8 . Type and glue your name, teacher and period in the top right corner of the poster.

Force Analysis
9 . A colored print out of your bridge's force analysis from the Bridge Simulation website is to be glued where space allows.

Option #2 - Template and Force Analysis

Overview - Each student enrolled in
Physics I and Pre-AP Physics will enter a Paper Bridge and Full Scale Roadway Template with Force Analysis to compete in Physics Olympics. Each student is to complete his or her project according the design requirements and due dates. Students may bring their project to class prior to competition day for approval and inspection by his or her teacher as well as to check their project for minimum supporting mass requirements.

Purpose - To construct a full scale roadway template along with force analysis of the bridge.Full Scale Roadway Template

1. The template is a true size construction of the roadway along with the specified details below.
2. Tape two pieces of paper together. Cut a roadway no less than 55.7 cm long by 5 cm wide. (You may use more than two piece of paper.)

3. Cut a hole ½” in diameter or the size of a dime at the center of the roadway.

4. Draw a 5 cm by 5 cm square centered on the hole to indicate the loading zone block. Your bridge construction must include bracing to support this block.

5. Scale the edge of the roadway along one side from 0 to 30 cm.

Force Analysis
5. Input your bridge design into the simulation.
6. Print your bridge’s force analysis. Either print the analysis in color or color your print out; red is tension and blue is compression.
7. Staple your complete road template on top of the printed force analysis. Be sure to write your name on both the template and the print out.
